- Who is Eligible for the Service?

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obese), OR
Have a BMI of 27 or higher (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition such as:

High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Obstructive sleep apnea
Cardiovascular disease
Prediabetes

Have previously tried a supervised diet, behaviour modification and increasing physical activity which failed to achieve a realistic reduction in weight.

You are NOT eligible if you:

Are under 18 or over 84 years old
Have a BMI under 27
Have a BMI under 30 without weight-related conditions
Are pregnant or breastfeeding

- What is a Summary Care Record and How Is It Used?

Your Summary Care Record (SCR) is an electronic version of your GP medical records, which can only be accessed by authorised healthcare staff that are directly involved in your care. It contains basic information about you (i.e. your name, address, date of birth and NHS number), your allergies, current medications, any reactions to medication and medical notes from the GP.
When you sign up for treatment with M W Phillips you are giving your consent to enable our pharmacists at M W Phillips Chemists to access your SCR for all medical occurrences whilst you are a patient.

We will need to access your summary care records to verify you as a patient when you sign up and to ensure that we maintain correct patient information. We may also need to access your SCR to help us provide you with a safe and effective pharmacy service, addressing any clinical issues to ensure that the right medication is dispensed to you. Only the pharmacists involved in your care will be able to access your Summary Care Record. You can request to view your SCR through your GP, or any other authorised healthcare professional at any time.

You can retract the authorisation to access your SCR at any point by informing the staff at M W Phillips.

- How do weight loss injectables work?

Depending on the treatment you use, they stimulate two different naturally occurring hormonal receptors: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

‍GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which in turn talks to the brain to make you feel less hungry and prevent cravings. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

‍GIP regulates energy balance in brain and fat cells, enhancing the GLP-1 effect of suppressing your appetite and improving sugar control.

Wegovy works on GLP-1 alone, whereas Mounjaro combines with GIP to increase the weight loss potential.

- What do weight loss injections contain?

The active ingredient in Wegovy is Semaglutide. Semaglutide belongs to a class of GLP-1 medications which contributes to reducing hunger pangs, slowing gastric emptying, and increasing insulin production.

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is Tirzepatide. This has a similar effect; decreasing food intake and slowing gastric emptying.

- Is it safe?

These weight loss medications are approved for use by the MHRA, the UK government department responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are safe.

Your treatment will be supervised by our qualified pharmacists and clinical team at M W Phillips. If you experience any side effects or changes in overall health, you must let us know so we can ensure your safety & wellbeing.

- What are the common side effects?

It is very common to experience some side effects as you increase your dosage over time.
Common side effects include nausea, headaches, diarrhoea and vomiting. Generally, these tend to subside in a few weeks into your treatment plan.
