NHS Pharmacy First

Pharmacy First is an NHS service providing fast, professional healthcare advice and treatment for common conditions without needing to see a GP. Our pharmacists can offer consultations and, if suitable, supply or prescribe medication.

IMPORTANT: When to seek urgent medical attention

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call 111 or 999 immediately:

  • You are feeling extremely unwell or worsening rapidly.
  • You have difficulty breathing or unexplained shortness of breath.
  • You have chest pain or tightness that does not go away.
  • You feel dizzy, confused, or extremely drowsy.
  • You have a high fever that does not respond to treatment or are shivering uncontrollably.
  • You have severe pain or swelling that is spreading.
  • You have had treatment already but are not improving.

Sinusitis

Symptoms: Blocked nose, yellow/green mucus, facial pain, headache, fever.

What you can do: Rest, stay hydrated, use saline sprays.

Sore throat

Symptoms: Painful swallowing, swollen tonsils, fever, cough.

What you can do: Drink warm fluids, gargle salt water.

Infected insect bites and stings

Symptoms: Swelling, redness, pain, pus at the site.

What you can do: Apply a cool compress, avoid scratching, consider an antihistamine if appropriate.

Impetigo

Symptoms: Red sores, blisters, yellow crusting, itching.

What you can do: Wash affected areas, avoid touching sores, do not share towels.

Shingles

Symptoms: Painful rash, tingling, burning, blisters, fever.

What you can do: Take paracetamol if suitable, keep rash clean and dry, avoid contact with vulnerable people.

Urinary tract infection (UTI)

Symptoms: Burning when urinating, frequent urge to pee, cloudy urine.

What you can do: Drink water, avoid caffeine and alcohol, take pain relief if suitable.
